Patriot Act Hearings..AKA Abuse of Power
I know this is old news, but...
Apparently it's OK to besmirch Freedom of Speech in House hearings. At least that's how Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., decided. During a hearing on the Patriot Act, Democrats who were gathered to argue the validity of the Patriot Act had their First Amendment right stomped on by having their microphones cut off and their right to speak silenced. Like an upset child picking up his toys and running away, Sensenbrenner abruptly ended the meeting and stormed off with gavel in hand. During his rant, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, D-TX., politley asked Representative Sensenbrenner to yield, to which Sensenbrenner bluntly said "I WILL NOT YIELD". Methinks someone needs to unbunch himself. Seems Mr. NoSensenbrener broke the rules he is supposed to be uphoding.
Click House Rules:
Hearing Adjournment (Clause 1(a)(1)(b) of Rule XI) - It is not within the power of the Chair to unilaterally recess or adjourn a committee hearing or meeting. If an objection is heard, a non-debatable motion to adjourn must be entertained and passed in order to do so.
As you can see, nowhere does it say "The Chair shall turn red, throw a tantrum, fail to yield when asked, abruptly end the meeting without motion to adjourn, steal the gavel and walk away in a huff".
Someone better hold this ass accountable.
